2008 Birthday Olympics

Rachel's 7th birthday is next week, and for the past couple of months we have talked about what she wanted to do for her party with her friends. She knew she wanted to do it in the backyard, but we weren't sure just what. At first, we talked about having a field day party. Then when we realized that the Olympics would have just concluded, we decided to have our very own 2008 Birthday Olympics!!! We planned out our events, made medals, made flags to represent each "country", and found songs to be each country's national anthem! Here's the invitation (I've XX'd out the information that gives too much personal info):

The party was last night and we had so much fun!!! I think the kids really enjoyed themselves! Rachel had invited all of the girls from her 2nd grade class, along with a few other friends from church. We had a really great turnout - only 2 girls were unable to attend. We also invited everyone's parents and siblings too!!! So needless to say, we had a backyard full of folks! But it was a lot of fun! We started out by eating pizza and letting the kids just play in the yard and on the playground for a while. Then we gathered everyone together and had the opening ceremony, complete with the Olympic fanfare music (thanks to Christy!!!). Rachel even got to carry in the torch and "light" the Olympic flame!!! Wendy's intern at school had made a huge Olympic rings poster for her class, so we were able to hang that from the deck. After the opening ceremonies had concluded, it was time for the games to begin!!! We started out with basketball, which was followed by the medal ceremony for the basketball winners. We had a total of 6 events. The other 5 events were: soccer kick, crab walk, baseball throw, egg & spoon race, and relay race. We had a medal ceremony after each event, and the winning team's song was played.
I don't have all the pictures yet. Mom took some pictures on her camera, and I need to get those from her. So you'll just have to wait another day or two to see the pictures!!!
