Even though Rachel's 7th birthday was over a month ago, today was her 7 year check-up. Overall she had a really good check-up, and didn't even cry when she got her flu shot! In fact, she giggled! It was a nervous giggle - the kind that she sometimes does when she doesn't want to cry. But she did great! She now weighs 50.5 pounds and is 47-3/4 inches tall! That is up 7 pounds and almost 3 inches from her 6 year check-up a year ago! The doctor said average growth is about 5 pounds and 2 inches, so she had a growth spurt this past year! She's now pretty much in the 50th percentile in her height & weight. Rachel had an eye test too. She struggled a bit on that. I could tell when she started having problems seeing because she was just guessing. It was pretty obvious - she said an H was a W and a R was a Q. Her vision from that test was 20/40. The pediatrician said that I need to take her to an optometrist within the next couple of months. I plan on doing that right away. Rachel's friend, Catherine, actually just went to the optometrist last week and got her glasses yesterday, so I've already asked her mom about who she went to. I'll call them next week to set-up an appointment. Rachel has never said anything about having a hard time seeing anything, and her teacher hasn't noticed either. Rachel sits on the back row in class, but the teacher says Rachel hasn't appeared to have any trouble seeing the board. I guess we'll find out more when we take her to the optometrist.
The only other thing the doctor had to say was that Rachel is fairly flat footed - not completely, because she does have a little bit of an arch. He just encouraged me to make sure that her shoes for sports have good arch support.
Overall it was a very good check-up! Next week she has her check-up with her allergist. The last time we were there, they mentioned re-testing her (allergy test) in the upcoming future and possibly starting shots. I know they won't re-test her this visit because that's something they have to schedule additional time for, but I don't know if that'll be something we have coming up soon or if they'll want to wait a few more months. We'll see.
